Encapsulated Earthworm Cocoons™
Improve the structure and boost fertility the natural way by planting our specially selected, ready-to-hatch earthworms. (VermiPods™) Our patented Encapsulated Earthworm Cocoons™ makes it easy to add soil-enriching worms directly to your soil.
If you cannot "plant" your VermiPods™ right away, keep them refrigerated until you are ready to plant them.
If you are going to keep them longer then just a few days in the refrigerator, place them into a zip lock bag along with another zip lock bag inside with the VermiPods™ not zipped. In this second zipped lock bag place a very wet paper towel to the soaking stage. Do not zip shut this second zip lock. This will keep the VermiPods™ moisture as high as possible.
It is very important to keep the VermiPods™ in high humidity until they are ready to be used.
Outdoor Hatching Instructions:
No need to handle live earthworms. You can plant VermiPods™ right into your garden or soil just like you would any ordinary seed. Poke a ½ to 1-inch hole into the soil, approximately 3 to 5 inches deep. Place as many VermiPods™ into the hole as you would like (up to 100) and cover it back up with soil. To further insure the highest survivability rate you may wish to plant all the VermiPods™ in the middle of your garden. In this way you can keep this area well watered with excess organic matter for feed. Over time they will eventually migrate to cover your whole garden.
Outdoor Planting Recommendations:
Minimum planting recommendation is one VermiPod™ per square foot. However, this is just a suggestion. Your soil can easily support 15-20 worms per square foot. Therefore the more VermiPods™ planted per square foot, the better the results.
Indoor Hatching Directions for Outdoor planting:
VermiPods™ should be kept refrigerated until you are ready to plant/ hatch them. The sooner you start the hatching process, the greater the hatching rate will be. Place the VermiPods™ into a cup of water and let soak for 1 or 2 hours. After soaking the VermiPods™, place them into a kitchen strainer and gently spray away the encapsulation material. Be sure the strainer openings are smaller then the cocoons. Spread out the washed cocoons onto a wet ½ sheet of paper toweling. Place a 2nd ½ sheet of paper toweling over the first. Gently roll the towel up and place it in a zip lock plastic bag. Store in a dark cool location like your office desk where you can keep an eye on them. Check weekly until you see evidence of their hatching. As soon as you see newly hatched worms, remove the rolled-up paper towel from the zip lock plastic bag and bury the rolled up paper toweling a couple of inches below the soil’s surface.
A high percentage of your VermiPods™ will hatch. Depending on the species of earthworm, normally you will get an average of one worm for each VermiPod you have purchased. Newly hatched worms may be seen in just a few hours after their soaking or days, weeks or months before they all hatch. The VermiPods™ are in a state of diapause. They have been known to hatch even after one year in their diapaused encapsulated state. Please be patient. It is nature’s way to ensure their survival.
